Ryanair Cancelled Flight: How to Claim €250 to €600

8/12/2026 — Airlines Quick Refund

With more than 3,000 daily flights, Ryanair carries more passengers than any other European airline — and unsurprisingly generates a high volume of cancellation claims. The good news: as an Irish carrier operating within the European Union, Ryanair is fully covered by Regulation EC 261/2004. Here is how to check whether your cancelled flight qualifies for €250 to €600 in compensation, and how to claim it.

Two separate rights when a flight is cancelled

EC 261/2004 gives cancelled passengers two distinct entitlements that can be combined:

  • A refund or re-routing: Ryanair must offer either a full refund of the unused ticket or an alternative flight to your final destination under comparable conditions.
  • Fixed compensation: a flat sum of €250, €400 or €600 depending on flight distance, payable on top of the refund when specific conditions are met.

Accepting a replacement flight, or even a refund, does not cancel your right to compensation. These are independent legal mechanisms — a point airlines rarely spell out.

Eligibility conditions

  • Departure from an EU airport (or Iceland, Norway, Switzerland), or arrival in the EU on an EU carrier. As Ryanair is an EU airline, virtually its entire network is covered. Flights departing the UK fall under the equivalent retained UK rules.
  • Cancellation notified less than 14 days before departure. More than 14 days' notice means no compensation is due.
  • No extraordinary circumstances within the meaning of the Regulation.
  • A confirmed booking on the cancelled flight.

The fare you paid is irrelevant. A €19.99 Ryanair ticket carries exactly the same rights as a full-fare booking.

The compensation bands

  • €250 — flights of 1,500 km or less (e.g. London Stansted–Dublin, Milan Bergamo–Marseille).
  • €400 — intra-EU flights over 1,500 km, and all flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km (e.g. Dublin–Malta, Manchester–Marrakesh, Brussels Charleroi–Cyprus).
  • €600 — flights over 3,500 km outside the EU. This band is rare on Ryanair's mainly short- and medium-haul network.

Distance is measured as the great-circle distance between your departure airport and your final destination as booked, including connections on the same reservation.

When compensation is reduced or excluded

If Ryanair re-routes you with only a modest delay, the amount can be halved or, in late-notice scenarios, excluded:

  • Notice given 7 to 14 days before departure, with a replacement flight leaving no more than 2 hours earlier and arriving less than 4 hours late.
  • Notice given less than 7 days before, with a flight leaving no more than 1 hour earlier and arriving less than 2 hours late.
  • Accepted re-routing arriving less than 2, 3 or 4 hours late depending on the distance band: compensation is reduced by 50 %.

Extraordinary circumstances: what Ryanair can rely on

The airline is exempt when the cancellation stems from an external event it could not have avoided even with all reasonable measures, such as:

  • severe weather (storms, dense fog, volcanic ash);
  • air traffic control strikes or airspace closures;
  • ATC restrictions, on-board medical emergencies, security threats.

Conversely, EU case law holds that strikes by the airline's own staff and technical faults arising from routine maintenance are not extraordinary circumstances. Cancellations caused by schedule reshuffles, aircraft rotation issues or crew shortages therefore remain compensable in principle.

How to file your claim

Start by gathering evidence: your booking reference (PNR), the cancellation email or SMS, boarding passes, and receipts for any expenses (hotel, meals, transport, replacement ticket). Documentation is what turns a claim into a strong claim.

Submit a written request to the airline's customer service, expressly citing Articles 5 and 7 of Regulation EC 261/2004, stating the amount claimed and the flight distance. Keep every dated exchange. If the airline refuses or stays silent, the national enforcement body of the departure country or the relevant alternative dispute resolution scheme can be approached.

In practice, Ryanair claims typically stall on three issues: vague cancellation reasons ("operational reasons"), blanket weather arguments without supporting evidence, and follow-ups that go unanswered. A reasoned claim backed by flight data and case law makes a measurable difference.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming a ticket refund replaces compensation — it does not.
  • Accepting a voucher without written confirmation of what happens to your compensation.
  • Failing to keep receipts for costs incurred at the airport.
  • Waiting too long: claims can go back up to 3 years, but evidence disappears fast.
